About Matt Sammon

It's never easy to make a major change in life, yet that is something I successfully did several times at key junctures to get to where I am today.

Like many people who got in to broadcasting, I was "bitten by the bug" at a very young age. Growing up in Tampa, Florida, I knew by the time I was in high school that I wanted to be a professional broadcaster. After learning the ropes of TV production at Armwood High School, I majored in communications with a minor in management at The University of Alabama, graduating in May 2000. While studying, I worked at practically every type of radio station in Tuscaloosa, eventually getting my big break back home in Tampa with "The Sports Animal" 620 WDAE. After seven years at WDAE, I was hired by the National Hockey League's Tampa Bay Lightning as the radio game day host. I then  worked my way up to the Director of Broadcasting & Programming, a position I held until August 2019.

With 25 years of broadcasting experience under my belt, and with plenty of time to reconsider my life's direction during the COVID pandemic of 2020, I decided to return to the University of Alabama online for my Master's degree in digital marketing. My broadcasting work always required me to create innovative ideas, and often crossed paths with new digital media so it seemed the perfect fit. While studying online, I accepted a business development position for a company I was consulting with in Scottsdale, Arizona. Looking for a big move at the "right time" in our lives, my family moved to Phoenix in the summer of 2021. I completed my graduate studies with a 4.0 GPA in May 2022, an accomplishment that timed well in life as I then accepted a full-time position with the Deer Valley Unified School District as the district's digital content manager.

I currently oversse the district's website including a full migration to a new platform in 2024), district social media, and audio and video productions. My work with the district was quickly affirmed in 2024 as our team won eight Arizona School Public Relations Association (ASPRA) awards and seven National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA) awards for our work. In 2025, our team was recognized again with nine ASPRA Awards. I was directly involved with a majority of these award-winning projects.

While my sports and broadcast experiences have been fun, nothing is as rewarding as being a devoted husband and father. Family comes first (left) with my wife and children. And while I enjoy working in content creation and communications, I always look forward to spending time at a baseball field or golf course somewhere in the world with my son (right).

Away from the workplace and the ball field, you'll find me collecting vintage baseball cards, a favorite past time of my childhood. I am also a voracious reader. My favorite books are non-fiction, mostly biographical or historical accounts of sports personalities, U.S. presidents, and leaders and eras in American history. I watch a little TV, though it's mostly a sporting event rather than a scripted program. Lately I spend a lot of my time seeing new things and visiting  great places in the Phoenix area. It's a wonderful place to live.
